Leader turn over

Question: With a WF Fly Line can you cut the tip back a few inches to make the leader turn over a bit better?

Answer: Cutting the tip off your line may not help if the leader set up you are using is not satisfactory, in fact it will cause the line to turn over faster and may make the problem worse. What is wrong here is that the energy is not being transferred down the leader. If you are not already making tapered leaders I suggest that you buy a tapered leader and try that with your line as it is, using a nail know to attach the leader (remove any braided loop). If turnover does not improve you may just be casting badly but it is impossible to get good turnover even if you are casting correctly and the leader is too light or too long for your purpose.

Question: When I'm casting I can the floating line to lay out nice and flat on the water but the leader coils up and the fly ends up near the end of the floating line. Response - Are you using a tapered leader or just a piece of leader material? Reply - Just a piece of leader material.

Answer: Suggest that you buy a tapered leader say 3X tippet and try that, if your present leader material is too fine it will not turn over and in any case a taper is necessary to carry the energy down to the fly itself. If the tapered leader does not turn over you have a casting fault, probably not accelerating to a stop properly.

Question: Why does my dry fly leader not fully "unfurl" on casting. I use a small dry fly and a 4lb leader.

Answer: Poor presentation, I'm guessing that your leader is probably not tapered? A correctly tapered leader should turn over correctly if it is cast properly. If my guess is correct I suggest that you buy some continuously tapered leaders and try one, if you cast is reasonably good it should straighten. 4lb would probably be a 4X leader but it may be 5X depending on the brand.
