| Fishing in Glen Lyon |
From Alexander Taylor’s fine book “The
Longest Cast” published by the Lyons Press - “Ally
Gowans – you’ll never find a finer fly fisherman anywhere
in the world, and he’s a streak of luck like you’ve never
seen.”From a bridge over the river Ericht, I watch Alastair Gowans
cast into some very tight spots. He could just as easily throw 150 feet
of line across the roaring River Tummel as he could sneak a cast under
some overhanging limbs 30 feet away. Learning from him was a pleasure.
From the forward to “Angling in Tayside”
- Although known as a salmon angler and fly tyer – and few of us
have not had success thanks to his fly the Ally’s Shrimp, Ally has
also enjoyed sea fishing and casting flies for trout on various Tayside
waters. His expertise as a fly caster is acknowledged by his contemporaries
many of whom, myself included have had to stand and watch as Ally covered
water we could not reach and inevitably took a fish. Ally is in the rare
category of being able to do it, teach it and write about it, which made
him an ideal author for this guide book. Ken Bell Angling
